Teaching Future Artists

As a teaching artist, Khadija works with youth across New York City teaching devised theater, spoken word poetry, playwriting, and dance. They are committed to building confidence and community through arts education, especially for black and brown queer youth.

Khadija works for National Queer Theater as the Teaching Artist of their Staging Pride program. This is a free after school program for queer youth. Khadija also works as a Teaching Artist at Marquis Studios, teaching Devised Theater, Slam Poetry, Improv, African and Hip-hop dance, and Theatre for Social Change. Khadija works as a writer and teacher for Teachers & Writers Collaborative, creating anthologies of student work. They also work as an actor and educator at NYSIM: providing feedback and acting in simulations in order to teach medical students and staff empathy. Khadija is a Playwriting mentor for the Pages To Stages Youth Fellowship with WP Theater and VYBE Theater, mentoring young Black and Brown girls through the process of writing a ten minute play. Additionally, Khadija works as a freelance artist and educator for Burlington School District’s Summer Racial Justice Academy, and with other programs that promote arts and education.

Khadija is passionate about theater education, and frequently works on their own Theater For Young Audiences project. They have written a play for young audiences based on her African Dance background called “Sunjata”. Khadija’s passion for Arts Education extends into her own artistry, and they are committed to further educating and empowering young populations through Artivism and the freedom of artistic expression.

Coaching:

As an educator and an artist, I provide a number of private services in my areas of expertise. Please reach out via my Contact Me page if you would like to book me for any of these services.

  • As a teaching artist and drama coach, I am available for monologue prep, performance prep, acting through song coaching, material selection. Additionally, I can provide information on the college audition process and guide students through this, having gone through it myself.

  • As a educator in writing, I have taught classes in the art to the college essay for International High School as well as individually for students. We can discuss the best and most effective way to tell your story. I will edit drafts, brainstorm concepts, and discuss and review supplementary materials pertaining to your college application.

  • As a dancer for Jeh Kulu Dance & Drum Theatre for my whole life, I am well trained in the art of African Dance. I am available for private and group lessons. I can also teach beginner Djembe drumming.

  • Looking for help to write a play, short story, or poem? I can provide guidance, teach creative writing techniques, and help you edit and revise your writing.

  • As a private improvisational coach, we will review the tenants of improv. We will go over game, impulses, scaffolding and more of the UCB philosophies. I am available to host improv activities at your corporate event or birthday party.

  • I am experienced in speaking and teaching Arts for Social Change. I have taught Artivism workshops at the Summer Academy for Racial Justice, as well as The People’s Forum. I am trained in restorative justice, and my theater and writing training helps me teach public speaking and other activism tactics through arts, in order to achieve a greater, more empathetic world.
